Conference

A major residential conference will take place it St Aidan's College, Durham City in the North East of England between Tuesday 31 March and Friday 03 April 2009.

The conference will:

  • explore and debate the process of placing the issues of rural communities and artists working with those communities alongside the concept of International capitals of culture
  • be an exploration of international work suitable for touring rural areas
  • showcase the NRTF & Northern Consortium's International Collaborative Commission's "work in progress". This involves two UK companies working collaboratively with international companies. For more information click on the link to the International Collaborative Commission pages.
  • highlight international practise in rural touring
  • flag up potential areas of investigation and matters for consideration with regard to the NRTF's long term International development programme. 

The conference will be targeted towards 150 delegates, including around 30 international representatives

Scope of the work and areas of operation

  • NRTF would like to consider the changing ethnic demography of UK rural areas - particularly recent immigration from EU accession countries
  • ACE,NE and Culture10 wish to explore the specific relationships between the North East and its North Sea maritime /Scandinavian links
  • Culture10 wishes to highlight the North East as a region and destination of international importance
  • Arts Council, North East [ACE,NE] are engaged with an exchange project researching activity in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The International Village of Culture project will allow that to be expanded.
  • Visiting Arts would like to look at issues including environmental and climate change, isolation and depression in rural areas, rural depopulation and aging demographies.
